The world can be seen as going towards smallness, if it is thought of as less. Thought always has in it motion.
In anything’s going towards less, the furthest point to be reached is zero. Zero is to one is as the finite to the infinite; for as many zeros as you please, or can get to, can be put into one, and still one would not be filled. And all decrease of anything gets to zero. A decrease of wood would get to no wood or zero wood. A decrease of green would get to zero green. A decrease of humanity would get to zero humanity.
We can see ourselves as decreasing; we can see ourselves as being divided. What the last point in our decrease would be, is zero. The smallest bit of matter we can imagine, as to ourselves, would be as something to ourselves-as-infinite. The finite is always infinite as to the last approach to zero, or zero itself. If we, then, are infinite, then we have the same status as the world as infinite.
I have said that zero as to something, or one thing, is as the finite to the infinite. It should also be seen that zero matter as to matter is likewise the finite as to the infinite. When matter is infinitely decreased, it approaches zero, or nothing, or form.
We have form. Form, in the sense that I have used it, is to our body as zero is to one thing. This likewise means that we are a finite as to an infinite in ourselves, and an infinite as to a finite.
If we regard anything as being as small as it can be, existence as indefinitely decreased, then we are as infinite number to it. The endless possibility of decrease in the world makes us infinite in the exact sense. It means the finite compared to final smallness, is infinite. —The electron in yourself, to yourself, is as yourself to the galaxies.
Imagine a block of wood being divided into 24 pieces. And all the 24 pieces in turn being divided into 24 pieces; and again and again and again, without end. At a certain time, the wood is neither matter nor space, neither substance nor form, neither wood nor energy; and also both. We are like the infinite universe, when we compare ourselves to no wood, or wood having no size. This is another way of saying that compared to zero, we are infinite.
When a thing is both space and matter, the form-substance situation is a one. Should we see ourselves as indefinitely decreased, we, too, would be form and substance as one.
There have been attempts to make the soul or mind or self a very small thing in the human body. (For example, there is the thought about the pineal gland in the 17th century.) However, it is now felt that mind or self is of the body as the circumference of a circle is of the circle; or the shape of a stem is of the stem. Now the shape or circumference of a stem or a ball, considered as having weight, is as nothing to one thing. Shape has no weight; matter has weight; so shape as matter, is like the infinitely small in relation to a stem or a ball as matter.
Of course, if matter is considered something different from shape, then shape as a thing has an infinity of shapeness in relation to the nothingness of shapeness which matter has. It follows that if mind is looked on as something other than body, as the shape of a ball is looked on as something different from the rubber of the ball, then the mindness of mind is as infinity to the nothingness-of-mindness of body.
This equation can therefore be made: We as mind are to ourselves as body, in terms of mind, as something is to zero; we as body are to ourselves as mind, in terms of body, as something is to zero. And this equation can be made: Mind is to body as something infinitely decreased is to that from which it has decreased.
In tabulated form, we have the following:
- Zero as to one, is as the finite to the infinite, because infinite zeros will not make one; and the finite will, how often multiplied, not make the infinite.
- A red thing as to a green thing is as the finite to the infinite, because a red thing, as red thing, however often multiplied, will not make a green thing.
- Shape as to material is as finite to infinite, because the shape of a ball, however often multiplied, will not make the rubber of the ball.
- Mind, or the “shape” of body, is as finite to infinite for a similar reason.
- So is body as to mind.
- Consequently, if body is to mind (in terms of mind) as the finite to the infinite, there is an equivalence of the relation of body to mind to the “electron,” or the relation of ourselves as body indefinitely decreased to ourselves in all our size.
Another tabulation might be:
- Red is not green; so green as to red is as nothing to something.
- The relation of nothing to something is as zero to one.
- The relation of zero to one is as the finite to the infinite.
- The relation of something infinitely small to ourselves, is as nothing to something.
- Therefore, we are infinite as to the smallest or most decreased thing in us.
And further, our relation to the most decreased thing in us, is as the relation of our mind to our body, when body is considered as not mind, or nothing as to mind.
