(a) Language is the representation by a self, in terms of what it is, of the reality this self is of and in; (b) Language in the smaller sense is words and how they are combined by a number of selves using these words, and how they are combined for the purposes of life in general.
Language is sound and picture. It can be seen as only sound; as sound and gesture; or as gesture.
The tongue is basic in the idea of language. The tongue is a representation of the mobility, diversity, and sensitivity of the self as a whole. It is fixed, and in much motion. It moves up and down, this way and that, does things; and meanwhile is responsive to miniature happenings.
