Poetry of Eli Siegel
Free Verse
Free verse is when
You’re at ease with something
You mean with your whole heart.
Free verse is the divine wag
Of a thought—
Filling oneself,
Filling what’s there.
Free verse is the waver
Of strictness;
The river in the lake;
The merry brook
In the iron;
And the iron in the ever-so-going, ever so easy, smoke—
Or haze, maybe.
