Poetry of Eli Siegel
Logic the Only Way to Assurance
Reality being beauty
It follows that
The somewhat old fountain-pen,
Now lying carelessly, there,
Is beautiful.
It follows that
The wretchedest poem
Is not so wretched,
From a certain point of view—
For the poem
Is an instance of reality
Even while it is not just to it.
It follows that
The most miserable feeling
Seen rightly or a certain way
Will seem beautiful and zestful.
Ah, logic,
You are the only way to paradise,
Or assurance.
